How to use your iPhone as a Currency Converter and comparison tool

This article will provide some handy tips for business travellers, and anyone who wants to track currencies.

To say I have become a fan of my iPhone and the Apple brand in general is a huge understatement, and each day I discover another reason to be impressed with iPhone.

As a new Apple convert I am committing about half an hour each day to discovering all the things that the iPhone can do and today’s discovery is about the iPhone currency converter.This feature is a hidden one so unless you are playing around with your iPhone or read a tips sheet somewhere online you may never discover this.

I was playing around in the stocks application, you know the little blue app on your home page that says stocks underneath it, and made my discovery. I had just entered my favourite stock prices to track and found that I could also enter currencies.

So once I realised that I could track a currency in real time I started to wonder if there was a way that I could track one currency against another and sure enough apple have made it possible.

I will explain the exact steps to set up currency tracking on iPhone below

First thing to work out is which currencies you wish to track. Then what their character symbols are. I live in Australia, and the symbol for the Australian dollar is AUD, for the examples, I will use AUD and USD that is the symbol for the US dollar in case Osama Bin Laden or someone else living in a cave is reading this.

Step one: On your iPhone home page tap on the little light blue icon that says stocks underneath it. The icon has a zig zag stock pattern running through it and unless you have rearranged your icons is at the top of the page.

Step two: After tapping on the stocks app if you look down in the right hand corner you will see an (i) with a white circular background so tap on it now.

Step three: The page that will now appear has a small + symbol in a square situated in the top left hand corner of the page. Tap on the plus symbol now and a screen will appear that asks you to enter either a company name or stock ID.

Step Four: Type in the currency code that you want to track, in my case I will type AUD for the Australian dollar. Then immediately type the currency that you want to track the first currency against. So next, I type USD.

Step Five: After typing AUDUSD, making sure there is no space between the two I then type in the = symbol and the x symbol. So on your screen you have typed AUDUSD=X .As long as you have entered the two currencies and equals x as in the example above, below will appear AUD to USD.

Step Six: Once the result shows you simply tap on the screen where AUDUSD=X (N/A) is showing and then tap on done. Your screen will now show the first currency entered, and how it has tracked against, the second over the period from 1 day to a year.

The currency comparison you have entered will now save for whenever you are travelling, trading or just comparing the two chosen currencies.

When you think about the amount of people, who will find this tip handy the number is quite large. If you are a frequent business traveller or involved in import and export having instant hand help access to this information is great.

On the screen that shows the currency comparison you will see that one day, one week, one month etc are shown even out to a year long tracking period. By tapping on the little numbers your screen will show just that time period.

This is great for someone that wants to look at what the trend between two currencies is and even for someone involved in currency trading that wants to see a live price for the day.

If you do not know what your three-letter currency symbol is simply Google it and remember it is important to enter all the letters together followed by the equals sign and the letter x. (make sure there are no gaps between any of these).

When I think about all of the tools apple have built into the iPhone,and the additional applications from external sources that I can add to personalise my phone Apple really have put the first multi-faceted life organization tool on the market.
